Methodology

Eighty years of operational discipline, codified. One method, five phases, applied to the frontline.

The Proudfoot System and the components inside it. The discipline that runs every engagement. The corpus that lets the AI reason against 80 years of delivery. The route into the diagnostic.

Operational performance is not the result of a slide; it is the result of an operating cadence that holds at the supervisor level on a Tuesday afternoon. Proudfoot has installed that cadence on 20,000+ engagements across 105 countries since 1946. The methodology that runs the work has compounded across 80 years of installation. This page sits above nine component disciplines that carry the depth.

Methodology
01

The Proudfoot System.

The Proudfoot System is one method to detect and correct the root causes of lost time and waste: 5 phases, 86 steps. Phase 0 Engage finds the prize. Phase 1 BVCA quantifies the prize and the path. Phase 2 New Ways of Working designs the operating system the engagement will install. Phase 3 Implementation runs the installation. Phase 4 Sustain holds the gain after the consultants leave.

The phases are the canonical lifecycle Proudfoot has refined since 1946 and codified across every engagement. Each phase has its own bible, its own deliverables, and its own internal quality gate. The output of one phase is the input to the next, and the engagement does not move forward until the gate is closed.

Phase 4 has a commercial form: Sustain, a subscription that keeps Proudfoot with you after the work, monitoring the operating system, coaching your supervisors, and re-diagnosing as conditions change.

Inside the system, nine component disciplines do the work: the diagnostic, the operating system, the supervisory behaviors, the executive interview discipline, the people-readiness instruments, the management-system observation, the supervisor-level operating cadence, the engagement model, and the gain-share commercial model.

02

Nine components. One discipline.

The Proudfoot System is the wrapper. The component disciplines are the work. Each is a discipline with its own depth, history, and the engagement context where it lands.

  • Business Value Creation Assessment

The Phase 1 diagnostic. 5 sprints. The Findings Chain. Decision-grade material in 3 to 4 weeks.

  • Management Operating System (Proudfoot MOS)

The 6+4 Element Framework. The four-level maturity scale. The 85/15 principle.

  • Active Management Behaviours (8AMBs)

The 8 observable behaviours that hold the operating system at the supervisor level.

  • Aerial Mapping

The structured executive interview discipline that surfaces the value at Phase 0.

  • People Solutions

Change readiness, behavioural assessment, the Q-Sort, the Ready Willing and Able survey.

  • MOS Critic

The management-system observation discipline that scores the operating system in flight.

  • Short Interval Control (Proudfoot SIC)

The supervisor-level cadence that turns the operating system into a daily rhythm.

  • Partnership at Execution

The engagement model. Senior operators on the frontline, paired with client operators, for the duration. Operator with operator, supervisor with supervisor, leader with leader. The same people who size the prize stay to install the cadence and hold the result.

  • Co-Venture

The gain-share commercial model that aligns Proudfoot return with client outcomes.

The Five-Day Diagnostic is the Phase 0 entry point to all of them.

03

Safety, behavior change, accelerated results.

Three themes run through the whole methodology surface, not as standalone offers but as commitments the engagement is held to.

Safety. Operating discipline at the frontline is the same discipline that makes a site safer. The cadence the supervisor runs to hold throughput is the cadence that holds safe operating practice. Proudfoot does not run safety as a separate workstream; safety is a property of the operating system the engagement installs. The methodology surface treats license-to-operate, regulator-grade tailings governance, and frontline safety routines as part of the operating result, not a side ledger.

Behavior change. Most of operational performance is determined by behavior at the point of execution. The methodology codifies what good supervisory practice looks like across the 8 Active Management Behaviours, and the engagement coaches against that profile until the behavior holds. Behavior change is not a workshop; it is daily, on the frontline, for the duration of the engagement.

Accelerated results. Proudfoot AI reads the operating data and the corpus first, remotely, before the senior operators reach the frontline. The diagnostic returns in a week because the methodology is encoded; 80 years of delivery, the hypothesis library, and the benchmark set run live alongside the consultants. First-banked-value lands earlier because the methodology is precomputed and the senior operators spend their five days on the frontline with your team, not in the data room.

04

80 years of delivery, encoded.

Proudfoot has installed at depth on 20,000+ engagements across 105 countries since 1946. The corpus that ran on consultant memory and on shared drives now runs as a structured retrieval surface the AI reasons against.

The TPS Bible sits at the center, the canonical methodology codified for AI consumption. The 6+4 Element Framework, the 8 Active Management Behaviours, and the 5-sprint BVCA architecture are all expressed as structured documents the AI can pattern-match against during a live diagnostic. The case study corpus sits alongside, sub-sector and capability tagged, retrievable by the operator on the frontline in seconds. The benchmark library carries the operating ranges that hold across sectors and across decades.

The corpus is not a marketing artefact. It is the working memory the firm runs against. Every engagement adds to it; every diagnostic reads from it; every senior operator carries the precedent into the next site visit.

05

Where the methodology came from.

The methodology evolved engagement by engagement across 80 years of frontline installation. The early decades carried the productivity diagnostic Alexander Proudfoot built in Chicago in 1946; the work traveled into mining, manufacturing, and process operations across the Americas, then into Europe, then global. The first documented client use of Management Operating System came at Mount Isa, Queensland, in March 1989. Short Interval Control was named in Taiwan in 1992. Aerial Mapping codified the executive interview discipline in the early 2000s. The 8 Active Management Behaviours were named formally in the 2010s after 20 years of supervisory behavior observation across mining, oil and gas, and process manufacturing operations.

The discipline did not start with a framework; the framework was extracted from the work. The same logic governs the AI-enabled phase of the methodology now: the corpus is what 20,000+ engagements taught the firm, the AI reasons against it, and the senior operator on the frontline interprets the result.

The full heritage sits on the About page; this hub is the methodology surface for buyers evaluating the discipline.

06

Industries, capabilities, functions.

The methodology runs the same on a copper mine and a chocolate factory. The detail of what gets installed adapts; the discipline does not. Proudfoot installs the methodology across:

  • Twelve industries, listed flat at all industries, from mining and metals through aerospace and chemicals to private equity portfolios.
  • Twelve capabilities organized against three value levers (Increase Revenue, Decrease Costs, Improve Working Capital), listed at the operations hub.
  • Three functions a COO recognizes: Production, Asset Management, and Construction.

Each industry, capability, and function page references the methodology components that land hardest in that context.

07

Who runs the methodology.

The methodology is owned across the partnership, not held by a methodology team. Senior operators on every engagement run the components against the operation; the methodology evolves on every engagement and is curated centrally by the partners closest to each component.

Methodology, applied.

The methodology is the operating cadence the engagement installs. The diagnostic shows it on a priority site, with two senior Proudfoot operators on the frontline and Proudfoot AI reading the operating data and the corpus first, remotely. MOS Critic runs across the management system; the eight behaviors are profiled across the supervisor population; a quantified opportunity hypothesis sits on the table at Day 7.
